Middle Tennessee State University

Situated in Murfreesboro, the geographic center of Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is one of the state’s largest and most comprehensive public universities. Tuition & Fees

Admissions & Acceptance

In order to attend classes at MTSU, students must gain official admission to the University and must complete the enrollment process, which includes advisement, registration, and payment of tuition and fees. In order to gain acceptance, students must meet one of the following conditions:

Option 1

For guaranteed admission, applicants must have completed the recommended college preparatory courses and must present a 3.0 gpa or Minimum composite ACT score of 22 OR minimum SAT total score of 1100 (Evidence-Based Reading/Writing & Math).

Option 2

Minimum 2.7 GPA plus ACT score of 19 OR SAT score of 990 (Evidence-Based Reading/Writing & Math).

Financial Aid

Buchanan Fellowship Program

The Honors is also home to the Buchanan Fellowship program, named in honor of MTSU’s Nobel Prize-winning alumnus, Dr. James M. Buchanan. This prestigious scholarship is part of the program, with Middle Tennessee State University awarding the Buchanan Fellowship—the highest honor—to 20 incoming freshmen each year.

Buchanan Fellows must complete a separate application process limited to first-time freshmen. They receive a host of unique benefits, including a full tuition waiver (up to 16 hours) guaranteed for four years (excluding summers), special seminars, priority registration, a book allowance, priority consideration for study abroad, and much more.

MTSU Freshman Guaranteed  Scholarships

MTSU awards an array of academic merit scholarship opportunities based on ACT scores and GPA.

Prospective students should go to the Admissions website,  mtsu.edu/apply, and begin the enrollment process in order to be eligible for the awards. The new scholarships will not stack with previously awarded guaranteed scholarships nor will they be upgraded once awarded.

MTSU Foundation and Departmental Scholarships

MTSU offers approximately 700 endowed and other scholarships to approximately 2000 students each year through special programs sponsored by various academic and administrative departments. Application processes vary from department to department. Many of these Foundation and departmental scholarships require online applications or paper applications.

Biology

Biology helps us better understand the characteristics and the impact of external influences, both short-term and long-term, upon the continuing processes of life in our world. It helps us contribute to human health advancements as well as gain a more in-depth understanding and awareness of the world around us. It opens the door and builds a foundation for students to grow into many useful and interesting career paths including becoming a research scientist, pharmacologist, nature conservation officer, forensic scientist, science writer, ecologist, biomedical engineer, or any number of similar occupations. 

journalism

The Bachelor of Science in Journalism is offered through the College of Media and Entertainment at MTSU. The Journalism degree offers preparation for students who wish to be journalists–news reporters, copy editors, feature writers, editorial writers, freelance magazine writers, and online or multi-platform journalists.

Journalists provide news, information, and commentary that help citizens make decisions affecting their lives and participation in a democratic society.

media management

Media Management majors study how to lead, supervise, and motivate employees in the media industry. Program professors are teachers whose backgrounds and skills include academic and professional achievement at the highest levels. The curriculum covers marketing, sales, distribution, programming, and management for the media industry. Students learn about the inner workings of media companies such as radio, television, and digital media. Outside the classroom, students can become involved in student media organizations where there are hands-on opportunities in management, marketing, sales, and production. 

Social Work

The Department of Social Work at MTSU prepares students to serve as social work practitioners, scholars, and leaders who assist individuals, families, groups, and communities at the local, national, and international levels. Our faculty seeks to develop culturally informed, community-engaged students who promote social justice and respect for diversity and human rights through research, coursework, fieldwork, and public service.
